Thermal bonding, an innovative solution for creating bindings

Thermal binding, or heat-sealing binding, involves securing a notebook or booklet binding by heating. The pre-glued thermal cover becomes adhesive when heated, using the same principle as heat-sealing adhesives used in textiles.

Hot binding can be used for many types of written documents, such as notebooks, technical files, booklets, and magazines. This technique produces a sturdy cover without damaging the pages.

Advantages of thermal binding

Thermal binding allows you to quickly and efficiently create bindings, in small or large quantities, for documents ranging from a few sheets to several hundred pages. The resulting cover is square, making it easy to store and transport booklets and notebooks.

The sheets inside are preserved as they are not perforated by the binding, and no additional elements such as rods are added to the spine. The binding can be easily customized in terms of color and printing.

Adhesive coating for thermal binding

The Hocquard division of Louison Industries produces many types of bindings for heat sealing, thanks to decades of expertise. Paper or fabric is glued in large widths before being cut and packaged in rolls, which are then used for heat sealing documents.

We use environmentally friendly adhesives that guarantee perfect results during the thermal binding process.

Ready-to-use pre-glued bindings

We supply ready-to-use glued rolls for heat-sealed binding of administrative documents such as cheque books and slips. The books produced in this way are sturdy and hold all the pages securely in place.

Our pre-glued covers are suitable for industrial production and strictly comply with the specifications of our banking sector customers in terms of colour and technical characteristics.

FAQ | Thermal binding

Thermal binding is mainly used to create bindings for administrative or accounting documents. It is used in particular to create covers for checkbooks, balance sheets, delivery slips, reports, administrative directories, etc.

Depending on the desired strength, several types of hot melt adhesive can be used. Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) adhesives, which are effective and offer good value for money, are the most commonly used. For greater durability, polyolefin (PO) or polyurethane (PUR) based adhesives are used. These adhesives are known for their resistance to moisture, chemicals, and temperature variations.

Once completed, the gluing cannot be undone without damaging the document. Thermal binding is therefore irreversible and guarantees that the booklet will hold perfectly.

The binding heating temperature is designed to have no impact on the sheets of paper. Heat sealing therefore protects documents from damage or burning.
